Computer Slow? | Simple Advice

The following is an article written and published in directories by Will Monty. This is a great step by step action plan for computers that are slow.

I didn’t want to spend a great deal of money correcting my computer’s problems. So I set out to learn as much as I could about the why a computer becomes slow and what can be done about it on my own, with my limited knowledge and experience in computer repairs. I have been successful to a great extent and have my computer running at a close to normal speed now. I made some mistakes in the process that can be avoided and I hope my experiences will help you.

Here are some simple steps if your computer runs slow:

Begin by doing a scan of your PC’s windows registry. You can find these from many registry cleaners online and most will let you do the scan free so you can diagnosis your computer slow issues.

Next, analyze the results of the scan. If it found more than a couple of dozen registry errors then the registry is a factor in your computer’s speed slowing down. If you used a “free” scan you will have to sign up and purchase the cleaner’s program before it will correct or delete the errors. The scan or test is free but the cure is not.

My Final Step was finding solutions other than a registry problem. These are the steps if: (1) The scan did not find many errors so you can eliminate the registry as the problem; or (2) After you have purchased and run the cleaner your computer is still slow.

1. Do a Windows Update. Simply go to the Control Panel find “Up Date Windows” and click it. The update will be automatically done.

2. Remove all temporary files. This would include internet files located in your browser Tools, Options area. You may also do a search for temp files on your hard drive by going to Start, search and putting in “temporary files”.

3. Do complete virus scan and do an update of your anti-virus protection. you may want to set the anti-virus to a safer level.

4. Update or change your spy-ware and mal-ware protection. Get computer technician’s recommendations here. These programs can vary greatly for their performance. You can simply ask a tech at a computer store what he personally uses and most all of them will gladly tell you. You can either purchase it locally or online. Spy-ware and mal-ware are some of our main reasons for a computer running slow.

5. Now Defragment your PC’s hard drive. Go to Programs and then Accessories then System Tools and click Disc Defragmenter. The system will then run a scan and you just follow on-screen instructions.

6. Disc Cleanup. This is similar to #5 above. Go to Programs, Accessories, Tools and click on Disc Cleanup. And again follow instructions.

7. Random Access Memory or RAM. This can be a problem more often than people think. Without enough RAM a computer will be slow and yet most computers can have RAM increased very simply. This is an area you may need some help with in determining how much, if any, you need to add. Also the installation is easy but you will need to ask a technician to explain the process or research on line for installation instructions.

A very large percent of slow computer problems can be resolved with the easy steps listed above. When your computer runs slow the best first step listed, Registry Cleanup, is usually the problem and is an easy fix.
